Why Do We Celebrate Easter Sunday?

Easter Sunday Resurrection of Jesus Christ

On April 10, 2020, we celebrated Good Friday. This was the day that we remembered the suffering and crucifixion of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He sacrificed his life for us so that our sins may be forgiven and so that we could have eternal life.

Today is Easter Sunday and this is the day that we rejoice because the Lord Jesus Christ was resurrected from death. We can read about the resurrection of Jesus in the Bible. The story of the events that led to the disciples finding out that Jesus Christ had risen can be found in the gospels of Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20.

As the story goes, very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, a young woman named Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where Jesus was buried. She saw that someone had rolled away the stone to the tomb. Mary ran and told the disciples that someone had taken the body of Jesus away and she did not know where they had taken him.

Two angels appeared to Mary and asked her why she was crying. Mary replied that Jesus had been taken away and she did not know where they laid him. Then she turned around and saw Jesus. As soon as he called her name she knew that it was the risen Lord. She went back to the disciples and told them that she had seen Jesus.

Jesus later appeared to the disciples and showed them the piercings in his hands. The disciples believed that Jesus was alive and they were very glad.

So Easter is not about bunnies, eggs and baskets of candy. We celebrate Easter to worship God who sacrificed His one and only Son Jesus to die on the cross of Calvary and was resurrected so that we may have eternal life even though we do not deserve it.

The resurrection of Christ gives us hope and new life. Jesus can change our lives if we ask him to come into our hearts, be our Saviour and forgive our sins. Jesus has conquered death and has triumphed over evil, death, and hell. No matter the struggles and pain we are experiencing in this life, we can have hope in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who has overcome death and the grave, and is alive forevermore.
