What is Good Friday?

Good Friday, Jesus, Crucifixion

Today is Good Friday. It is the day that we remember the suffering and crucifixion of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. Jesus sacrificed His life so that our sins would be forgiven and so that we could have eternal life.

We can read about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Matthew 26-27, Mark 14-15, Luke 22-23, and John 18-19 in the Bible where he was betrayed, arrested, accused, abused, mocked and crucified.

Just to summarize the events that led to the crucifixion of Christ, Jesus was betrayed by Judas who was one of his disciples. He was arrested and brought before Pilate. Jesus was beaten and the soldiers placed a crown of thorns on his head and mocked him.

Jesus was then led away to be crucified. Pilate wrote ‘Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews’ and put it on the cross. The soldiers nailed Jesus’ hands and feet to the cross. When all things were accomplished, Jesus said: “It is finished”. He bowed his head and died.

The story is not over, but I will leave this until Easter Sunday.

What we can learn from this is that while we are going through this difficult time, we can remember the suffering of Jesus and know that God understands what we are going through.

We live in uncertain times and although we may not know what the future holds, we do not have to face the challenges of this life alone. God is with us and he will walk with us every step of the way.
