There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of magazine articles, blog posts, videos, and books that tell you why you should set goals, how to set goals, and how to achieve those goals. But what happens when you don’t set goals? How will this affect your future? This blog post will explore the consequences of not setting goals for your life.
When you don’t set goals, you have no direction.
It can be difficult to set goals if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. There are times when you may feel like you have no purpose and you don’t know what path to take to be truly happy or successful.
These feelings you have are very common and you are not the only one who has felt this way. There are plenty of people in this world who feel lost and have no idea where their lives are going. But thankfully, you do not have to go through life with no direction.
You can take comfort in knowing that when you feel lost, God will take you by the hand and lead you in the right direction. It is written, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV).
When you don’t set goals, you may miss opportunities.
Not knowing what you want or where you want your life to go may cause you to miss opportunities. For example, because you weren’t sure which university you wanted to attend, you missed the opportunity to get a scholarship. You wish that you would meet someone, fall in love, and get married, but because you always stay home and never go out, you missed the opportunity to meet your soul mate.
Setting goals is not just about deciding on what you want to achieve, it also means creating actionable steps to achieve your objectives over a period of time. If you do not set a goal and do not put steps in place to achieve that goal, opportunities will pass you by without you realizing that they were there in the first place.
When you don’t set goals, you become unmotivated to do anything.
Having a lack of motivation can keep you from being successful. It can stop you from taking action. For example, you want to lose weight. You know that you need to exercise more, eat healthily and cut out junk food in order to lose weight.
The desire is there, but because you don’t like to exercise, you don’t feel motivated to do it. If you keep telling yourself that you’re not motivated to do anything then you may never accomplish your dreams.
It takes hard work, sacrifice, focus, and commitment to achieve your goals. If you want to be successful, then you need to change your way of thinking.
Stop identifying yourself as unmotivated. Instead, tell yourself that you are highly motivated. Start doing things that you enjoy that motivate you. Think of creative ways to help motivate you to achieve your goals.
Just like in the example above, if you want to lose weight but don’t like to exercise, think of something that you can do that helps you to be active so that it doesn’t feel like exercise. If you think that dancing or riding a bike is fun, then use that as a motivator to exercise more to lose weight. Once you start seeing results, then you may be motivated to move on to other forms of exercise to help you to lose weight.
Don’t let a lack of motivation stop you from achieving your goals. If you take something that you want to achieve and break it down into smaller, more manageable steps, as you achieve each step, you will feel more motivated to reach your goals.
When you don’t set goals, you’re simply drifting through life.
A person without goals is like a leaf that floats aimlessly down a river with no direction and no control over where it goes. When you don’t set goals, you could end up just like the leaf in the above example, simply drifting through the rivers of life with no purpose, no direction, and no control over where it takes you.
You need to set your own goals so that you can control the direction in which your life will go. Don’t be a drifter who tends to go with the flow. Forge your own path, create your own destiny, and don’t be afraid to change direction. It will be hard and you will face challenges, but taking control of your life will help you to go in the direction you want to go.
The path to success can be difficult, but you don’t have to go it alone. God promised that He will always be with you. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV).
When you don’t set goals, you’re less likely to be successful.
Research shows that people who set goals are “ten times more likely to succeed than those who did not” (26/11/2020, Importance of Setting Goals and Objectives for 2021, Your Finance Team). Setting goals provides you with clear direction as to the outcome you want to achieve, which gives you something solid to work towards.
Without setting goals, you may become demotivated and less productive in what you set out to do. Ensure that you set goals that will motivate you in achieving them. Therefore, you would be more likely to succeed.
In summary, when you don’t set goals, you may find that your life has no purpose and no direction. You may find yourself drifting along with no control of where you go. So it is important to write down your goals and to create actionable steps to help you to accomplish your objectives. You need to be motivated to achieve the outcome you desire, so ensure that you set realistic, specific goals that work for you.
